Background 

Lira district is located in northern Uganda East Africa. It was formed in 1974 from the then Lango district and it is occupied by Lango ethnic tribe.Lira city is the main municipal, administrative, and commercial centre of Lira District, located  340 km North of Kampala the capital City of Uganda.  The mid-year population of the town is 108,600 as estimated by the Uganda Bureau of  Statistics (UBOS-2011). While the population of Uganda below the poverty line is 38%, in Lira District the population living below poverty line is 66%.

Health statistics and Burden

The literacy rate is still low especially among female above 10yrs (51.9%) yet the district fertility rate is high over 7.9 children per women. Maternal mortality rate is still high over 500/100,000 live births and the Infant mortality rate remains high 127/1000 live births. Most child and adult morbidities and mortality are of preventable common causes. The access to health services in this district is extremely poor with only 33% access as compared to still a low access to health in the whole country of 49%. There are 19 health units in Lira, of which 2 are Health Centre IV, 8 Health Center III, 9 Health Center II. Lira Regional Referral Hospital (RRH) is one of the high volume hospitals of the region as it serves a population of 408,043 in Lira district. With a capacity of 346 beds, Lira Hospital offers both general and specialized services and is a teaching hospital.

This is why Indo-Africa Charitable Society wants to extend voluntary services to the people of Lira District which include eye care, dental care, women health and general medical care services.

The prominent physical features in Lira District  include the hills of Ngetta, and Akia. Of key notice is the Murchison Falls Conservation Area ( MFCA ) that comprises of Murchison Falls National Park, Bugungu and Karuma Falls Wildlife Reserves. This is where the Nile explodes through a narrow gorge and cascades down to become a placid river whose banks are thronged with hippos and crocodiles, waterbucks and buffaloes. The vegetation is characterized by savannah, riverine forest and woodland. Wildlife includes lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, hartebeests, oribis, Uganda kobs, chimpanzees, and many bird species, you can’t afford to miss.
